The School Concerts

The Classic Buskers

The Heath String Quartet

Smithdon High School - 2011

The Classic Buskers feature Michael Copley on over 40 woodwind instruments and Ian Moore on accordion. They perform virtuoso and fun arrangements of the most popular classical works. Their children’s programme of classical music 'without the boring bits' has been performed throughout the world in schools, theatres and concert halls. It is guaranteed to hold the children’s attention, with lots of colourful instruments and props to see and hear, plus audience participation. Their website is at www.classicbuskers.moonfruit.com.

O Duo

The Acquarelle Guitar Quartet

Smithdon High School - 2010

As the photo shows, this concert was a huge success. O Duo, Oliver Cox and Owen Gunnell, persuaded over 30 of the audience to come to the stage and take part in the music. The highlight was at the end when Owen fired questions at the boys and girls, each time a forest of arms shot up and the answer was invariably correct. All this just ten days before O Duo performed a piece specially written for them at the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s 80th Birthday Concert at the Barbican. See their website: www.oduo.co.uk.

Audience reaction

"We went to Smithdon to see some musicians. Someone paid for our bus so we could go because we couldn’t go last year because the bus was too expensive. We had to miss swimming to go to hear the music so I didn’t think I wanted to go, but when I went it was BRILLIANT"
Oliver

"I enjoyed it when the two did some music by themselves. Usually I only hear music on the TV. It was fun seeing people really making music"
Lucy

"I liked going up on stage and playing the vibraphone. It was cool making our own sounds. Our instruments aren’t that good at school so it was really good trying something like that"
Shania

"I really liked the people at Smithdon with the instruments. They are famous and really good"
Connor

We are grateful to Smithdon High School for allowing us to reproduce a photograph of the concert and to Brancaster Church of England Primary School for permission to reproduce some of the children’s comments.
